Chief Tonganoxie

Last lineal chief of the Delaware
Indians and "Man of Peace," lived near
here prior to 1864. His lodge was
a stopping place on the trail into
Kansas. His father was Tamarund whose
Delawares went to the aid of kinsmen
in James Fenimore Cooper's famed
classic, "Last of the Mohicans". A
grandfather Tamanand made a famous
treaty with William Penn in 1683.
