The Brown County Genealogical Society was chartered in June 1997 with 52 charter members and there are now over 130 members. The society started out in the Brown County Historical Museum with a few books and meetings were held in the public library. The society moved into its own research library in a building on the courthouse square in 1999. The Brown County Genealogical Society is supported by donations, membership dues and books sales. It receives no State, County or City tax moneys.
A monthly meeting with guest speaker is held on the third Thursday of each month at 7 p.m. at the research center, 116 South 7th Street, Hiawatha, Kansas. The public is invited to attend.
We are staffed by volunteers, so hours will vary. Please call 785-742-7511 or email email@example.com or drop us a note in advance to schedule an appointment.
The research library contains records from many northeast Kansas counties, including Brown, Doniphan, Nemaha, Jackson, Atchison and Shawnee. There is an extensive collection of Brown County newspapers from 1864 to 1998 which include papers from Fairview, Powhattan, Willis, Reserve, Hiawatha, Everest, Horton and a few newspapers from Atchison and Doniphan Counties. Other records include census records, cemetery records from many counties in Kansas, Brown County probate records, Brown County tax assessment rolls, Brown County school records, old plat maps, files of births, obituaries and marriages, rolls of microfilm of census records . In addition the library has a collection of family histories and genealogical information of other states.
The library volunteers are always available to assist you in your research. The Society appreciates donations for assistance received and there is a small charge for copies of research documents.
