CRIMINAL ACTION NO. 4. BASTARDY. ATTORNEYS. Geo. W. Black, For Plaintiff. S. Brown, For Defendant. ===== On this 20th day of January, 1879, personaly [sic] came Eunice Love, before me, B.F. Meredith, a Justice of the Peace, in and for Topeka Township, and County of Shawnee and made her written complaint under oath, charging, that on or about the 3d day of December, 1878, she was delivered of a bastard child, and that William Jones is the father of said child. January 20th, 1879; Warrant issued to Isaac White, Constable. January 23d, 1879, Warrant returned and filed, endorsed in substance, executed by arresting William Jones and have him before the Court. At the request of the Defendant, the trial was adjourned until the 29th of January 1879, at 2 o'clock, P.M. January 23d, 1879, Subpoena issued for Chas. Jordan, R.A. Hill, T.L. St. John, Susan Tanner, and Eliza Keller, in behalf of Defendant. January 25th, 1879, Subpoena returned and filed. January 29th, 1879, the parties being present, the Defendant in person, and by his Attorney, Stephen Brown Esq., proccedings [sic] were had as follows: Eunice Love was duly sworn, and her testimony reduced to writing, carefully read to her, and by her duly signed. The Defendant in his own behalf, and Chas. Jordan, R.A. Hill, T.L. St. John, Susan Tanner and Eliza Keller, were duly sworn. After hearing all the testimony offered, the said William Jones was by me adjudged to be the father of said child, and required to enter into a recognizance in the sum of Five Hundred Dollars, with sufficient sureties, payable to the State of Kansas, for his appearance at the next term of the District Court of Shawnee County.
