This photograph was submitted by Bonnie Bunce, July 2001. Here is what she says about it:
The 3 young boys seated on the grass on the far right side of the photo were my uncles, John Wesley, George Clinton and Forrest Jackson Bunce, all dead now. Their parents, my grandparents, are in the photo in the back standing just to the left of the guy in a tree and I think my g.grandmother Martha J. Jackson) Mehaffey Root was standing behind my grandfather. My grandfather, George K. Bunce, is the man in the moustache, and the child my grandmother, Estella M. (Mehaffey) Bunce, was holding was my father, Leslie R. Bunce, probably age 2, since there's no baby in the picture and my aunt Vida was born in Sept. 1904, so I think this picture was probably taken in the summer of 1904 before her birth... Tescumseh was about 8 miles outside of Topeka, Kansas, so others in the photo were probably his neighbors in the area...my grandfather was a member of various organizations. My father had this about that part of his life in the following paragraph from the Bunce Genealogy and History c. 1977, which is also on my website...
"[George Kress Bunce] Belonged to the Lyceum: Meetings held for the purpose of giving speeches, debating public issues and entertainment. He was referred to as the songster in a note book of his which contained a record of their minutes of meetings, recorded by various members. He sang tenor best but could also sing baritone and bass. Held offices in several lodges, including Modern Woodman and farmers' organizations in Watson, Kansas."
So this gathering could have had something to do with one of those organizations. I think he was a member of a Farmers Grange, too, from something my sister said."
If anyone can identify anyone else in the photograph, or knows when, where and under what circumstances the photograph was taken, please contact Bonnie Bunce or Teresa Lindquist.
