John H. Snowden

1925-2002

Services for Retired USN John H. Snowden, 76, Tonganoxie, will be at 10:30 a.m. today, Feb. 6, 2002, at Porter Funeral Home, 1835 Minnesota Ave, Kansas City, Kan. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Snowden died Friday, Feb. 1, 2002, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was born Nov. 27, 1925, in Chicago. He had lived in Tonganoxie since 1986.

He was a jet engine machinist who served for 30 years in the U.S. Navy before he retired in 1974. He was a veteran of World War II, and the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a member of the Tonganoxie Masonic Lodge, the Scottish Rite of Lawrence, the Abdallah Shrine, Byron H. Mehl American Legion post No. 23 of Leavenworth; the 40&8 Voiture No. 1163; and the Eagles of Leavenworth.

His wife, Laura, died in 1995.

Survivors include two sons, Bill Snowden, Hanford, Calif., and Bob Snowden, North Port, Fla.; and two granddaughters.

1941-2002

A private memorial service was conducted for Darrell Fisher, 60, McLouth, who died Feb. 1, 2002, at Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan. Cremation was planned.

Mr. Fisher was born April 16, 1941, in Maywood, Neb., the son of Ray and Leona (Moore) Fisher. He was retired from Richhold Chemical Co., Kansas City, Kan. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Tonganoxie.

Survivors include his wife, Sandra; two sons, Troy Fisher, Herman, Texas, and Mark Farley, Kansas City, Kan.; two daughters, Treasa Fisher, Oklahoma City, and Kathleen Farley, Leavenworth; and four sisters, DeEtte Schwedler, Pinellas Park, Fla., Devona Bullock, Olathe, Darlene Branting, Big Springs, Neb., and Doris Martin, North Platte, Neb.

Services for Arthur R. Kenton Sr., 82, Wheat Ridge, Colo., were Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at Quisenberry Funeral Home, Tonganoxie, with burial in Glenwood Cemetery, Basehor.

Mr. Kenton died Feb. 2, 2002, in Lafayette, Colo. He was born May 3, 1919, on a farm outside of Basehor, the son of John Wesley and Mattie Mariah (Smith) Kenton.

He served four years in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He retired 18 years ago from Coors Porcelain Company, Golden, Colo.

Survivors include a son, A. Robert Kenton Jr., Golden, Colo.; a daughter, Carol D. Kenton, Leavenworth; a sister, Nadine Holton, Tonganoxie; and four grandchildren.

Nellie K. Fischer

1911-2002

Services for former Tonganoxie resident Nellie K. Fischer, 90, Lawrence, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at St. John Lutheran Church in Aliceville, Kan., with the Revs. Jay Watson and Glenn Wooton officiating. Burial will be in St. John Lutheran Cemetery in Aliceville.

Mrs. Fischer died Sunday, Feb. 3, 2002, at Brandon Woods Nursing Home in Lawrence. She was born Nov. 10, 1911, in Herkimer, Kan., the daughter of Thomas and Minnie (Meuller) Schotte. She was a farm wife and homemaker. She was a member of St. Martin Lutheran Church in Basehor.

She married Lorenz W. Fischer on Dec. 25, 1932, in Aliceville. He died on July 4, 2001.

Survivors include a son, James D. Fischer, Lawrence; two brothers, Rudolph Schotte and John Schotte, both of Burlington; three grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Services for Gloria M. (Noah) Neu, 72, Basehor, were Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Highland Park Funeral Home in Kansas City, Kan. Burial was in Highland Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Neu died Thursday, Feb. 7, 2002, at her home. She was born June 25, 1929, in Wilsonville, Neb., and had lived in the Kansas City area since 1943.

She was co-owner and secretary for the Heartland Plumbing and Heating Company in Basehor, formerly known as Neu Plumbing and Heating. She was a member of St. Martin's Lutheran Church, Basehor, past president of the Lutheran Women's Missionary League at the church and had served as chairman of the Sunday school at the church. She was a member of Basehor Gold Pride and the Basehor Chamber of Commerce. She also was past president of the Basehor Parent-Teacher Association and was past president of the Basehor Historical Society. She was made honorary president after her illness.

She married Wesley Neu on Sept. 1, 1960. He survives, of the home.

Other survivors include five sons, Gregory Lee Neu, El Dorado Springs, Mo., Kelly Lee Neu and Rick Lee Neu, both of Basehor, Doug Lee Leu, Leavenworth, and Duane Lee Neu, of the home; a brother, Paul Noah, Holdridge, Neb.; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. A daughter, Arline, died in 1957.

Services for Marie Wirthman, 99, Tonganoxie, were Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Tonganoxie, with the Rev. Mark Goldasich officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Tonganoxie.

Mrs. Wirthman died Friday, Feb. 8, 2002, at Tonganoxie Nursing Center. She was born March 12, 1902, in Neumark, Germany, the daughter of Karl and Marie Franz.

She was a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

She married Michael A. Wirthman on Nov. 26, 1930. He died on Nov. 9, 1976.

Survivors include two sons, Henry O. Wirthman, Tonganoxie, and Robert L. Wirthman, Lawrence; a sister, Freida Franz, Laufach, Germany; 10 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Services for Katheryn Ann Sanderson, 21, McLouth, were Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Tonganoxie, with the Rev. Mark Goldasich officiating. Burial was in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Tonganoxie.

Mrs. Sanderson died Saturday, Feb. 9, 2002, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan. She was born April 21, 1980, in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Ronald Farris and Dorothy Moore Farris. She was a 1998 graduate of Basehor-Linwood High School, a homemaker and a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church.

Survivors include her husband, Nicholas, and their infant daughter, Lillianna May Sanderson, both of the home; her father, Ronald Farris, Basehor; her mother, Dorothy Farris, Overland Park; a sister, Kristen Farris, Basehor; and a paternal grandmother, Elizabeth G. Farris, Kansas City, Kan.

Services for Doris Pauline (Moore) Wiley, 88, Tonganoxie, will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 16, 2002, at Quisenberry Funeral Home in Tonganoxie. Burial will be in Hubbel Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie.

Mrs. Wiley died Tuesday, Feb. 12, 2002, at Tonganoxie Nursing Center, Tonganoxie. She was born July 31, 1913, on a farm east of McLouth, the daughter of Perl and Ella (Knowlton) Moore. She was a graduate of Eureka County School and McLouth High School.

She married Walter L. Wiley on Feb. 12, 1933. He died on Nov. 19, 2001.

Mrs. Wiley worked at the North American Bomber Plant during World War II and later as a nurse at Providence Medical Center for 30 years. She was a member of the Stanwood Friends Church for more than 60 years.

Survivors include two sons, Lyle Wayne Wiley, Grove, Okla., and Ronald L. Wiley, Brookline, Mo.; a daughter, Judith Kay Evans, Tonganoxie; a sister, Virginia Ambler, Plano, Tex.; three granddaughters; and four stepgrandchildren.

1930-2002

Services for Dolores V. Tillotson, 71, Lawrence, were Feb. 25, 2002, at Quisenberry Funeral Home, Tonganoxie. A private inurnment was held.

She died Feb. 21, 2002, at Lakeview Manor, Lawrence. She was born Aug. 11, 1930, in Tonganoxie, the daughter of Ernest and Geraldine (Cline) Torneden.

Survivors include two brothers, Ovyd Torneden and Daniel Torneden, both of Lawrence; and two sisters, Dora Bussart, Oskaloosa, and Terry Torneden, Eudora.

1929-2002

Services for Beatrice Bettis, 72, Kansas City, Kan., will be at 11 a.m. today, Feb. 27, 2002, at Meyer's Family Funeral Home, 6300 Parallel Ave., Kansas City, Kan. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens at 94th and State streets, Kansas City, Kan.

Mrs. Bettis died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan. She was born Nov. 20, 1929, in Williford, Ark., the daughter of Benjamin and Myrtle Hawkins.

She graduated from Williford High School and later married Robert Chester Bettis. They were married 52 years. He preceded her in death in 1991.

Mrs. Bettis worked for 12 years at Sunshine Biscuit Company in Kansas City, Kan., and was a member of Landmark Baptist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Roger Bettis, Tonganoxie, Darrell Bettis, Kansas City, Kan., and David Bettis, Kansas City, Kan.; two daughters, Glenda Garner, Kansas City, Kan., and Diane Mangelsdorf, Tonganoxie; 10 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

1926-2000

Services for Robert L. "Lou" Oxley, Tonganoxie, were Tuesday, Feb. 26, 2002, at the Jarbalo United Methodist Church. Burial was in Fall Creek Cemetery.

Mr. Oxley, 75, died Friday, Feb. 22, 2002, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan. He was born Aug. 27, 1926, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Robert K. and Gladys (Hurd) Oxley. He retired in 1994 from being western sales manager for Adco Corp., Jackson, Mich., dealing in architectural and automotive sealants.

He was a 1950 graduate of Miliken University, Decatur, Ill. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Oxley was a member of the Jarbalo United Methodist Church. He was a board member of the Rural Water District No. 8 and treasurer of the Fall Creek Cemetery Association, both in Leavenworth County. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Elizabeth (Cook) Oxley. On Sept. 15, 1967, he married Marilyn Mews in Sioux Falls, S.D. She survives.

Other survivors include three sons, Greg Oxley, Great Falls, Va., Stewart Oxley, Tonganoxie, and Clayton Oxley, Lewisville, Texas; a daughter, Janet Turner, Boca Raton, Fla.; and four grandchildren.
