Memorial services for Othal 0. Wiley and Eva Graham Wiley will be at 11 a.m. May 19, 2001, at the Reno Church, located in the Tonganoxie Historical Park, Tonganoxie. Inurnment will be in Hubbel Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie.

Relatives and friends are invited to return to the church to share a noon meal and memories.

Othal 0. Wiley, 100, died May 3, 2001, at Yuma, Ariz. Eva Graham Wiley, 96, died March 11, 2001 at Somerton, Ariz.

Othal 0. Wiley was born Feb. 24, 1901, near Linwood, the son of Lemuel and Anna Hilner Wiley. He grew up in Leavenworth and attended school there.

For many years he farmed near Reno. To better his health he went to Arizona and while there he grew a variety of citrus fruit. He collected precious rocks in the desert and made jewelry using the stones he had cut and polished. During the time he lived in the Reno area, he served on the Reno Township Board, Leavenworth County Conservation Board and was a member of Reno Methodist Church.

Eva Graham Wiley was born March 24, 1905, near McLouth, the daughter of Robert and Nannie Osborn Graham. She graduated from Tonganoxie High School and attended Emporia State Teachers College, where she received a teaching certificate. She taught at Smith School, northeast of Tonganoxie, for two years.

She was a member of the Reno Methodist Church, Reno Ladies Aid, Busy Bee Club, Kent Homemakers EHU. She served on the Leavenworth County EHU Extension Council and as justice of the peace for Reno Township. From 1962 to 1969, she worked at the University of Kansas Student Housing Department as a cook.

In Yuma, she volunteered at the Senior Citizen Nutrition Center and received an honorary citation for her work. She also helped with the Council on Aging.

The couple were married Nov. 2, 1924, and celebrated their 75th wedding anniversary in 2000. During their marriage the couple traveled and visited all 50 states.

Memorial services for both also were conducted Tuesday, May 8, 2001, at the First United Methodist Church in Yuma.

Survivors of the couple include three children, Janet Kaiser, Topeka, Emil F. Wiley, and June Hagenbuch, Law-rence; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild; two stepgreat-grandchildren; and a stepgreat-great-grandchild.

Mr. Wiley is also survived by a brother, Walter Wiley, and a sister, Elizabeth Hammons, Tonganoxie

Gerald Soetaert
1939-2001

Services for Gerald Soetaert, 61, Tonganoxie, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 10, 2001, at Quisenberry Chapel, Tonganoxie.

Mr. Soetaert died Monday, May 7, 2001, at the University of Kansas Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.

He was born June 27, 1939, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of George and Geneva (Fyock) Soetaert.

He retired from Procter and Gamble after 33 years as a laboratory technician. On Sept. 14, 1985, he married Kay Emery in Reno, Nev.

Survivors include his wife of the home; his mother, Merriam, Kan.; five sons, Mark Soetaert, McLouth, Michael Soetaert, Kansas City, Mo., John Soetaert, St. Joseph, Mo., and Shaun Soetaert and Scott Soetaert, both of Tonganoxie; three brothers, George Soetaert, Corona de Tucson, Ariz., Tony Soetaert, Shawnee, and Robert Soetaert, Spring, Texas; a sister, Sheila Custer, Kansas City, Kan.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter.

Fala Ellen Mark
1928-2001

Services for Fala Ellen Mark, 72, Tonganoxie, will be at 1 p.m. Friday, May 18, 2001, at Quisenberry Funeral Home, Tonganoxie. Burial will be in Hubbel Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie.

Mrs. Mark died Tuesday, May 15, 2001, at Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan.

Mrs. Mark was born May 21, 1928, in Shubert, Neb., the daughter of James L. and Aurbie (Wileman) Bowers. She retired from Hemisphere Products, Kansas City, Mo., where she was office manager.

She was a member of Stony Point Christian Church, Kansas City, Kan.

On July 2, 1949, she married Robert D. Mark in Fall City, Neb. He survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Steven S. Mark, Rogersville, Mo., and Doug B. Mark of McLouth; a daughter, Andrea L. Putthoff, Tonganoxie; a brother Jean Bowers, Fall City, Neb.; 10 grandchildren; and 2 great grandchildren.

Virden E. Tate
1926-2001

Services for Virden E. Tate, 74, Bonner Springs, were Saturday, May 19, 2001, at Holy Angels Catholic Church, Basehor. Burial was in Bonner Springs Cemetery.

Mr. Tate died May 15, 2001, while on vacation in Las Vegas with his wife. He was born Oct. 8, 1926, in Herington, the son of William and Viola Tate.

He was a Navy veteran of World War II. He was employed at General Motors for 31 years. He was a member of United Autoworkers Local 31. After retiring, he worked on lawn and garden tractors at Theno Farm Supply. He was also a member of Eagle Lodge 3191. Mr. Tate was a member of Holy Angels Church.

Survivors include his wife of 54 years, Helen Tate, of the home; two daughters, Sharon Racer, Tonganoxie, and Vickie Kotay of Plano, Tex.; a son, Steven Tate, Bonner Springs; two sisters, Bernice McGovern and Alberta Watson, both of Bonner Springs; and five granddaughters.

Russell (Rusty) Theno
1957-2001

Services for Russell (Rusty) Joseph Theno, 43, Charlotte, N.C., a former Tonganoxie resident, were Monday, May 21, 2001, at the Quisenberry Chapel in Tonganoxie. Burial was in Memorial Park Cemetery in Lawrence.

Mr. Theno died Wednesday, May 16, 2001, in Winston-Salem, N.C. He was born July 31, 1957, in Lawrence, the son of John and Mary (Pettengill) Theno. He was a 1975 graduate of Tonganoxie High School. He was employed as gas line foreman for Classic City Mechanical Company, Winterville, Ga.

Survivors include two sons, Rodney Joseph and Stephen Jacob Theno, both of Lawrence; a daughter, Lisa Marie Theno, Lawrence; his mother, Mary Theno, Tonganoxie; two brothers, John Scott Theno, Kansas City, Mo., and Alan Jacob Theno, Tonganoxie; and a sister, Marylea Daugherty, St. Louis, Mo.

His father, John Jacob Theno, died March 21, 1998.

Frank Allen McRill
1935-2001

Graveside services for Frank Allen McRill, 66, Tonganoxie, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, May 24, 2001, at Hubbel Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie.

Mr. McRill died Saturday, May 19, 2001, at his home. He was born Jan. 11, 1935, in Tonganoxie, the son of Walter S. and Gladys (Jones) McRill.

He was a member of Cecile Daylight Masonic Lodge No. 305 AF&AM and Scottish Rite, both of Kansas City, Mo. He graduated from Tonganoxie High School in 1954, and was a retired truck driver.

Survivors include two brothers, Walter L. McRill and Gene E. McRill, both of Kansas City, Kan.

Monte Lee Kampfer
1942-2001

Services for Monte Lee Kampfer, 59, Ozawkie, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Quisenberry Funeral Home. Burial will be in Hubbel Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Kampfer died Sunday, June 3, 2001, at Lawrence Memorial Hospital. He was born Feb. 10, 1942, in Kansas City, Kan., the son of Arthur L. and Lillian (Lyon) Kampfer.

He retired in 1998 as a production supervisor for Owens-Corning Fiberglass in Kansas City, Kan. He was a member of Haven Baptist Church, Kansas City, Kan., Masonic Lodge No. 14 AF&AM, Oskaloosa, and the Eagles club, Ozawkie.

Survivors include his mother, Lillian Stanley, Lawrence; three sons, Monte Kampfer Jr., Wellsville, Todd Kampfer, Ozawkie, and Jeff Kampfer, Kansas City, Mo.; a daughter, Kelly Gentry, Kansas City, Mo.; two brothers, Ronald Kampfer, Piqua, Kan., and Gary Kampfer, Lawrence; a sister, Judy Livingston, Vinita, Okla.; and seven grandchildren.

Evelyn Louise Hill
1921-2001

Services for Evelyn Louise Hill, 80, Tonganoxie, will be at 10 a.m. today at Quisenberry Funeral Home. Burial will be in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Kansas City, Kan.

Mrs. Hill died Sunday, June 3, 2001, in Leavenworth.

She was born March 10, 1921, in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of Dewey and Hazel (Buckingham) Johnson. She was a homemaker and a member of the Tonganoxie Christian Church.

On Oct. 21, 1939, she married Roy E. Hill in Kansas City, Kan. He died on Oct. 11, 1999.

Survivors include two sons, Terry Hill, Tonganoxie, and Steven Hill, Winchester; two daughters, Judy Allen and Jerry Johnson, both of Kansas City, Kan.; three sisters, Marjorie Eaton, Kansas City, Kan., and Joann Watts and Deloris Frazier, both of Albuquerque; 15 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.

Virgil Neal Shelton
1922-2001

Services for Virgil Neal Shelton, Leavenworth, were Friday, June 8, 2001, at Victory Baptist Church, Tonganoxie. Burial was in National Cemetery, Leavenworth.

Mr. Shelton, 78, died June 5, 2001, at his home. He was born Sept. 17, 1922 in Topeka, the son of Ben and Bernice (DeWine) Shelton.

He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and the Korean War. Mr. Shelton retired after 20 years from the U.S. Army and worked as a guard at Lansing State Penitentiary for 18 years. He was a member of Victory Baptist Church in Tonganoxie and was a church trustee.

Mr. Shelton married Phyllis Monshower on April 16, 1945. She died on Jan. 29, 1993. He married Gladys Roberts on May 12, 1993. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include a daughter, Janice K. Tuner, Tonganoxie; a stepson, Roger Wyer, Lawrence; a stepdaughter, Roberta Guffey, Belgrade, Mont.; two sisters, Bernice Darrow and Nancy Thompkins, both of Topeka; two grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Rachel E. Sumner
1910-2001

Services for Rachel E. Sumner, 90, Emmett, were Saturday, June 9, 2001, at Holy Cross Catholic Church in Emmett. Burial was in St. Clere Cemetery north of Emmett.

Mrs. Sumner died June 5, 2001, at an Onaga hospital. She was born Aug. 2, 1910, in Seneca, the daughter of August and Blanche Becker Haug. She lived in Emmett most of her live.

She attended Longbranch Rural School. For the past 10 1/2 years, she lived at Golden Acres Nursing Home.

She was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and was a member of the church Altar Society. She was a charter member of the Happy Homemakers and was a member of the Jolly Workers, both at Emmett. She had been a 4-H leader and had been a past member of the St. Marys Literary Club.

She married Morgan L. Sumner on Sept. 22, 1931, in Emmett. He died on Feb. 24, 1990.

Survivors include two daughters, Maxine E. LoScalzo, Yukon, Okla., and Sharon Legg, Leavenworth; three sisters, Mildred Philips, Arizona, Lucille Jones, Colorado Springs, and Beatrice Kauffman, Canon City, Colo.; three brothers, Art Haug, Lawrence, Regis Haug, North Kansas City, Mo., and Bob Haug, Bonita Springs, Fla.; nine grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

No services are planned for Janet Lee O'Neal, 67, Tonganoxie, who died June 10, 2001, at Tonganoxie Nursing Center.

Cremation and private inurnment were planned.

Mrs. O'Neal was born in April 1943 in Independence, Mo., the daughter of Frank and Doris (Cooper) Pratt. She was a 1952 graduate of North East High School, Independence. She was a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Peggy and Donna O'Neal both of California.

Mrs. Church died Wednesday, June 13, 2001, at her home. She was born March 24, 1920, in Dunivant, the daughter of Clarence and Blanche (Manchester) Gaunt.

She retired as a florist in 1976. She was a member of Tonganoxie Christian Church and Rinda Chapter 82, Order of Eastern Star, both of Tonganoxie.

She married John C. Church on July 23, 1939, in St. Joseph, Mo. He died on Dec. 1, 1992.

Survivors include a son, Richard Meyer, Linwood; two daughters, Jeanette MacDonald, Ocala, Fla., and Betty Roberts, St. Joseph, Mo.; two brothers, Robert Gaut, Cottonwood, Ariz., and Gene Gaut, Kansas City, Mo.; a sister June Boyce, Valley Falls; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; a great-great-grandchild.

Graveside services for Hattie David Pierson, 90, Lawrence, were Tuesday, June 19, 2001, at Oak Hill Cemetery in Lawrence.

Mrs. Pierson died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Brandon Woods Retirement Center in Lawrence. She was born July 24, 1910, in Tonganoxie, the daughter of Theodore and Della (Osborne) Davis.

She graduated from Tonganoxie High School and attended nurses training at St. Luke's Hospital in Kansas City. From 1943 to 1946, she operated the family wholesale business, August J. Pierson & Son, while her husband served in the armed forces. She then returned to the home to raise her two children.

She was a member of the Plymouth Congregational Church in Lawrence. She also served on numerous PTA, Girl Scout and civic organization committees.

She married Elmer Pierson in 1934 at her home in Tonganoxie. He died in 1984.

Survivors include a son, John Pierson, Lawrence; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. Her daughter, Paula "Polly" Pierson Benner, died in 1996.

Services for Richard John Verhage, 95, Tonganoxie, were Tuesday at Tonganoxie Christian Church, with the Rev. Ben Saathoff officiating. Burial was in Hubbel Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie.

Mr. Verhage died Saturday, June 16, 2001, at Brandon Woods Nursing Center in Lawrence. He was born June 11, 1906, in Valencia, Kan., the son of Samuel and Bessie (Smelser) Verhage.

He farmed near Tonganoxie until 1943. He worked for Franklin Dairy and Sealtest Ice Cream Co., Tonganoxie, and retired in 1972 from All Star Dairy, Lawrence. Mr. Verhage was a member of Tonganoxie Christian Church.

On July 1, 1927, he married Edna Baird in Topeka. She died on Dec. 31, 1991. Survivors include six daughters, Shirley Schultz and Norma VanDyke, both of Tonganoxie, Joan Vance, Edwardsville, Betty Earls, Lawrence, Donna Troop, Parker, Colo., and Janice Myracle, Lansing; 21 grandchildren; 39 great-grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Peterson died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at Villa St. Francis in Olathe. She was born May 15, 1926, in Leavenworth County.

She was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church and a lifelong Basehor area resident.

Her husband, Harvey Peterson Jr., died in 1991, and a son, Larry Peterson, died in 1958.

Survivors include two sons, Earnest Peterson, Olathe, and Garry Peterson, Loveland, Colo.; two daughters, Irene Hudgins, Springhill, and Joyce Bowlin, Tonganoxie; a sister, Earlene Ebert, Kansas City, Kan.; 20 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

She attended special education classes at Leavenworth High School in Leavenworth and was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Tonganoxie.

Survivors include her parents; a sister, Tammy Lynn Pippert, Topeka; and her maternal grandparents, Dan and Evah Basel, Lawrence. Her paternal grandparents, Gerald and Fern Dally, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Nelson died Sunday, June 24, 2001, at her home. She was born Oct. 30, 1909, in Chicago, the daughter of John A. and Oleen (Marks) Nelson.

She was a homemaker and a member of Mount Olive Lutheran Church in Overland Park.

Her husband, Edward E. Nelson, died in 1966.

Survivors include a son, Edward E. Nelson, Linwood; a daughter, Janice E. Nelson, Los Angeles; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services for Paul F. Rahija, 82, Kansas City, Kan., were Friday, June 29, 2001, at the First Baptist Church of Bethel, Kansas City, Kan. Burial was in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens.

Mr. Rahija died June 26, 2001.

He was born June 8, 1919, in Kansas City, Kan.

He was a World War II veteran of the U.S. Navy. He was a carpenter for 52 years.

He married Mary Horner of Kansas City, Kan., in 1942.

The Rahijas lived in Tonganoxie for 21 years, from 1977 to 1998.

Mr. Rahija was member of the First Baptist Church of Bethel for 31 years.

Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons, Jim Rahija, Kansas City, Kan., and Wayne Rahija, Tonganoxie; two daughters, Linda Minnis, Kansas City, Mo., and Kim Kolman, Tonganoxie; two sisters, Helen McClosky, Henderson, Nev., and Bertha Draskowich, Kansas City, Kan.; nine grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. An infant son, David Rahija, preceded him in death.

Mrs. Drake died Friday, June 29, 2001, at the University of Kansas Medical Center in Kansas City, Kan.

She was born Sept. 18, 1960, in Kansas City, Kan., the daughter of John and Maria (Kiosow) Brysky.

She was a homemaker and had worked for 10 years in the cafeteria at General Motors in Fairfax.

She was a member of St. Luke's Bezantynign Catholic Church in Sugar Creek, Mo., and had been active as a room mother at Tonganoxie Elementary School and in the Parent-Teacher Association.

She married Richard D. Drake on March 27, 1986, in Lawrence. He survives, of the home.

Other survivors include four sons, Richard D. Drake Jr., Tonganoxie, Michael J. Drake, Matthew R. Drake and Joshua D. Drake, all of the home; her parents of Kansas City, Kan; a brother, Michael Brysky, Shawnee; two sisters, Anna Roach, Raytown, Mo., and Julie Brysky, Kansas City, Kan.
