Jack W. Whitford
1917-2001

Services for Jack W. Whitford, 83, Tonganoxie, were Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Quisenberry Funeral Home, Tonganoxie, with the Rev. David Crook officiating. Cremation was planned.

Mr. Whitford died last Wednesday, March 7, 2001, at Brandon Woods Health Center in Lawrence. He was born July 11, 1917, in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Robert and Amy (Fessler) Whitford.

He was the owner of Business Advertising Inc., Tonganoxie from 1957 until he retired in 1999. He was a member of West Haven Baptist Church, Tonganoxie, Gideons International and the Full Gospel Businessmen's Fellowship, Kansas City, Mo.

He married Louise Bedsaul on Oct. 3, 1959, in Kansas City, Mo.

Survivors include his wife of the home; four sons, John, Lee's Summit, Mo., Chester, Greenwood, Mo., Richard Glenn, Excelsior Springs, Mo., and David, Olathe; a daughter, Shirley Boone, Houston; 13 grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Ima Alta Knudsen
1903-2001

Services for Ima Alta Knudsen, 97, Winchester, were at 10:30 a.m. Monday, March 12, 2001, at Barnett Funeral Home, Oskaloosa, with the Rev. Jay Gideon officiating. Burial was in the Winchester-Wise Cemetery.

Mrs. Knudsen died Thursday March 9, 2001, at Cushing Memorial Hospital in Leavenworth.

She was born Sept. 17, 1903, at Belpre, the daughter of Victor A. and Viols Edna Hager Johnson. She had lived in Winchester since 1945 moving there from Kansas City, Kan., where she had lived many years

Mrs. Knudsen was a homemaker and had worked as an aide at the Jefferson County Memorial Hospital Annex and Laundry from 1959 to 1969.

She also did volunteer mending for the hospital for many years and was a member of the Jefferson County Memorial Hospital Auxiliary Unit. She was a member of the Winchester Christian Church and Ladies Aid Society in Winchester.

She was a charter member of the Davis-Gibson American Legion Post Auxiliary No. 387 in Winchester. She joined in 1948 and was the oldest living member at the time of her death.

Mrs. Knudsen served as a block warden in Kansas City, Kan., during World War II. She had formerly been a member of Eastern Star and the Rebekah lodges both in Kansas City, Kan.

She married Knud Christian Knudsen on Sept. 5, 1923, at Belpre. He died Feb. 27, 1966.

Survivors include two sons, Knud LeRoy Knudsen, Kansas City, Kan., and Robert H. Knudsen, Tonganoxie; a daughter, Imogene L. Reynolds, Winchester; seven grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

Virgil Wayne Burnett
1924-2001

Services for Virgil Wayne Burnett, 76, Mullinville, were Monday, March 12, 2001, at the United Methodist Church in Mullinville, with Masonic services.

Burial was in Hillcrest Cemetery in Mullinville.

Mr. Burnett died Friday, March 9, 2001, at Hilltop House in Bucklin. He was born May 10, 1924, in Mullinville, the son of Ralph Elliott and Ethel Geraldine Rudd Burnett.

He was a lifelong resident of Mullinville. He graduated in 1943 from Mullinville High School. He was a farmer and custom combiner in Kiowa, Hamilton and Finney counties.

Mr. Burnett was a member of the Mullinville United Methodist Church, was a past master of the Masonic Lodge in Mullinville and had served for several years on the school board.

On March 14, 1943, he married Shirley Ruth Ireland. She survives.

Other survivors include two sons, Cecil Wayne Burnett, Tonganoxie, and Darrell Alan Burnett, Mullinville; two brothers, Karl Burnett, Loveland, Colo., and Duane, Boulder, Colo.; a sister, Doris Stephenson, Harper; and four grandchildren.

Raymond W. Kistler
1925-2001

Services for Raymond W. Kistler, 75, Tonganoxie, were Tuesday, March 13, 2001, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Tonganoxie, with the Rev. Mark Goldasich officiating. Burial was in Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens, Kansas City, Kan.

Mr. Kistler died Saturday, March 10, 2001, at Providence Medical Center, Kansas City, Kan. He was born May 21, 1925, in Atchison, the son of William and Katherine (Wolters) Kistler.

He retired in 1988 from International Harvester Corporation in Kansas City, Kan. He was a member of Sacred Hearth Catholic Church, Tonganoxie.

He married Wilma Jean Stuart on Jan. 15, 1949, in Kansas City, Kan. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include five sons, Raymond S., Kansas City, Kan., Carl E., Overland Park, Roger T., Merriam, Mark A., Kansas City, Mo., and Kevin A., Chandler, Ariz.; four daughters, Catherine I. Ehmke, Wichita, Barbara E. Meyer, Wichita, Mary R. Daniels, Piper, and Marlene T. Caton, Kansas City, Kan.; three brothers, William H., Palmdale, Calif., Herbert M. and Robert E., both of Atchison; two sisters, Katherine Casey, Bartlesville, Okla., and Bernice Dooley, Atchison; 16 grandchildren; and a great-grandson.

Eva B. Wiley
1905-2001

Memorial services will be held at a later date for Eva B. Graham Wiley, 95, a former rural Lawrence resident.

Mrs. Wiley died Sunday, March 11, 2001, in Somerton, Ariz.

She was born March 24, 1905, in rural McLouth, the daughter of Robert and Nannie Osborn Graham.

Survivors include her husband, Othal O. Wiley, Somerton, Ariz.; two daughters, Janet M. Kaiser, Yuma, Ariz., and Topeka, and June Hagenbuch, rural Lawrence; a son, Emil F. Wiley, rural Lawrence; 11 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.

Walter L. Hubbel
1912-2001

Services for Walter L. Hubbel, 89, Bonner Springs, will be at 10 a.m. Thursday, March 15, 2001, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Basehor, with the Rev. Linus Evers officiating. Burial will be in Holy Angels Cemetery.

Mr. Hubbel died Sunday, March 11, 2001, at his home. He was born Feb. 13, 1912, in Tonganoxie, the son of Francis and Mary Theresa (Seufert) Hubbel.

He was a 1931 graduate of Linwood High School, Linwood, a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church and a charter member of the parish's Knights of Columbus. He had served as president of Wyandotte County Kansas Farm Bureau. He was a farmer.

He married Mary Agnes Kelly on May 9, 1944, in Kansas City, Kan. She survives, of the home. Other survivors include a son, James F., Basehor; two daughters, Mary Ann Huslig, LaGrange Park, Ill., and Nancy Jane Ogg, Jefferson City, Mo.; a brother, Floyd, Basehor; a sister, Leona Schwinn, Leavenworth; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

Louis E. Mills
1923-2001

Services for Louis E. Mills, 77, McLouth, were 10 a.m. Thursday, March 22, 2001, at Quisenberry Chapel in Tonganoxie, with the Rev. Mike Vernon officiating. Burial was in Hubbel Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie.

Mr. Mills died March 19, 2001, at Providence Place Nursing Center in Kansas City, Kan.

He was born May 12, 1923, in Tonganoxie, the son of Floyd and Louise (Overbaugh) Mills. He was a farmer and worked for General motors Leeds Plant in Kansas City, Mo., for 30 years. Tonganoxie Rural High School and was a member of United Auto Workers Union Local No. 93, Kansas City, Mo.

He married Wilma G. Reese on Nov. 21, 1947. She died last year. A stepdaughter, Connie McCloud, died in 1992.

Survivors include three brothers, Charles, Edward and Fred, all of Tonganoxie; four sisters, Ellen Harbaugh, Tonganoxie, Ruth Gerald, Parker, Colo., Frances Fanshier, Great Bend, and Florence Braga, Berwick, Maine; and a stepgranddaughter.

Shannon E. Wiley
1915-2001

Services for Shannon E. Wiley, 85, Leavenworth, will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Beldon-Sexton-Sumpter Funeral chapel, Leavenworth, with the Rev. Jim Bell officiating. Burial will follow in Kickapoo Cemetery.

Mr. Wiley died Sunday, March 25, 2001, at Medicallodge of Leavenworth. He was born Nov. 23, 1915, in Holton, the son of William and Jenny Dugan Wiley.

He served in the U.S. Army-Air Corps in the South Pacific in World War II. He traded livestock throughout the Midwest until 1959 when he began Wiley's Country Boy Meats in Lansing, until his retirement.

He enjoyed working with the local and farm communities for many years, and was active in forming the 4-H livestock sale at the Leavenworth County Fair.

He was a member of the First Christian Church and a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

On April 9, 1950, he married Vivian "Elaine" Hettich. She died Oct. 4, 1982.

In 1984, he married Margaret Zacharias Ulhrich. She survives, of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Bruce and Willard, both of Leavenworth; a daughter, Karen Works, Humboldt; a stepson, Dan Ulhrich, Salina; a step-daughter, Carolyn Guthery, Franksville, Wis.; seven grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

Otto L. Bretz
1910-2001

Services for Otto L. Bretz, 90, Leavenworth, will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, March 29, 2001, at Quisenberry Funeral Home in Tonganoxie.

Burial will be in Hubbel Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie.

Mr. Bretz died Monday, March 26, 2001, at his home. He was born Aug. 2, 1910, in Milton, the son of John P. and Margaretha (Liimp) Bretz.

He was a farmer and a World War II Navy veteran who served aboard the USS Rolf 362 in the South Pacific.

He married Nellie Lee on June 5, 1943, in Leavenworth.

She survives of the home. Other survivors include several nieces and nephews.

Nadine Vining
1923-2001

Graveside services for Nadine Vining, 78, Tonganoxie, were Friday, March 30, 2001, at Hubbel Hill Cemetery, Tonganoxie, with the Rev. Robert Kasper officiating.

Mrs. Vining died Wednesday, March 28, 2001, at Tonganoxie Nursing Center. She was born March 28, 1923, in Tonganoxie, the daughter of Clarence and Ida (White) Love. She was a homemaker and member of First Congregational Church, Tonganoxie. She married Howard R. Vining on July 11, 1954. He died on Feb. 25, 1999.
