I recently ordered a Civil War pension application filed by Elizabeth Thomas, widow of John Thomas. It turns out not to be the John and Elizabeth I am looking for, and I would be delighted to pass it on. Elizabeth "Bettie" Williams Thomas lived at 931 Pottawatomie St., Leavenworth, KS and died 16 Dec. 1933. She was the second wife of John Thomas, a black man and ex-slave who served in "Co. A, 83d U. S. col'd Troops Vols." His first wife's name was Serilda and they had one child, Hattie Jane, who died in the late 1870s. Elizabeth had a sister named Nannie Mason and a brother named Charles Williams. It appears that John Thomas was born in Lexington, MO, and belonged to the Bullen family, which was related to the Walton family. If you are related to John or Elizabeth, the file is yours.

Is there a possibility that the "Kansas Commoner" (1885) was precursor to the "Kansas City Star" or was in any way connected?
The extract below may be my Gr-Grandfather, Richard Lightfoot WRIGHT:

My paternal Grandmother, Effie B. Huggins, was born in Ottumwah Kansas, March 31, 1870, according to her own notes in family bible. She also states that her father, "Jo. Huggins, died June 9th, 1910, age 75 yrs. No of his grave at soldiers Home Leavenworth Kansas (3724 Dec. 29)". I believe he was a Civil War veteran. All I have is copy of aphoto of Effie and her father, standing in the road in front of a wood frame building on which is the sign "Huggins Livery". This may have been in Madison, Kansas, or in Burlington, where she married my grandfather, Warrick Wiley Webb, Nov. 2, 1892. Any information about Huggins family would be greatly appreciated. Best regards.

David P. HARRIS and Mary Nelson Harris lived in Leavenworth County, Delaware Twp., KS from about 1867 until their deaths, (his - 1885; hers - 1902). I'm trying to locate descendents of some of their children who stayed in Kansas: David Early Harris; Christopher Colombus Harris; Lorenzo Dow Harris; and Finis Pulaska Harris (all were born in Missouri between 1846 and 1855). There were eight other children, but I don't believe they stayed in Kansas. I'd enjoy sharing the informtion I have found.
