August Kraus, 1860....trying to find him in a census report. He was in St. Louis December 1860 when he married Carolina Doerges, but is not in MO census. Family folklore says he was involved with the Union army and Leavenworth. I wonder if he was in Kansas for the census. Can you help? Sincerely, Robert Chagnon

William and Herman are on the census in Leavenworth with a family named Schmelezle. William and Herman's father could be Paul Vetter who shows up for the first time in the 1860's. -

I was told that I might locate military records for the Galvanized Yankees who were part of the US Volunteer Infantry in Leavenworth. I wonder if you might give me a clue...a direction to go by which I might locate the records of my great grandfather, Thomas Edward Williams. He was a captured rebel at Stones River and held at Gratiot Street Prison in St. Louis prior to joining Union forces and heading west and ultimately to Colorado. I will appreciate any input you may offer. Thank you, Nancy Nielsen

Looking for Nellie SMITH who lived at 1435 Chestnet in Leavenworth for many years. Her brother, Ira Wetz, lived with her at one time. The listing is in the city directory for 1963. She does not appear in the 1964 book. Does anyone know the area of 1435 Chestnut (house might have been at corner of 15th Street and Chestnut)? Could this have been a rooming house? Please let me know, good or bad about Nellie Smith and her home at 1435 Chestnut. Dorcas Clark Low 1020 BelHaven Shreveport, LA 71118

I would appreciate ANY information on the property located at 1426 Cherokee, Leavenworth from the 1920's to about 1963. It was owned and occupied by Nellie Smith (akaNellie Wetz). Was this a rooming house? My source for information were City Directories for those years. She is not listed after 1963. Nellie Wetz Smith was a great-aunt. Thanks for any information you can give me. Dorcas

Seeking information on the family of Christian WEBER who lived in the 3rd Ward of Leavenworth City on 21 July 1860. Living with him was his wife Emma, mother Catherine Weber, and four children: Carrie, Emma, Charles, and Edward. They later moved to the Marshall County area of Kansas, but I believe some of his family remained in Leavenworth for many years after he left. On the census he is listed as a butcher. Any help would be appreciated. Donna Brown Berner

He was suppose to work at a prison in Leavensworth, possibly a warden. Thanks for any info or places I might research to find this type of info.

My Great-Grandmother was named Ellen McCARTHY. She was in Leavenworth in approximately 1860 after coming to the USA with a brother (first name unknown). I would like to find the descendants of the brother of Ellen McCARTHY. Ellen married one James HOWE (may have been spelled Hough) in the 1859-1860 time frame and moved to Dickinson county (it is possible they married there). The brother had granddaughters who were named Nellie and Kathryn McCARTHY and they worked in Kansas City in the 1840s and 50s. The original McCARTHYS were Irish and from County Limerick. I know the brother's family was still in Leavenworth as late as the 1920s. Anybody know them?
