RCGS's library is several blocks west of the Kansas State University campus on Claflin
Road, and just north of the Mercy Health Center on Sunset Avenue. It provides convenient
hours, being open Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday from 10 A.M. to 4 P.M., on
Wednesday from 1-4 P.M. and 7-9 P.M. and on Sunday from 2-5 P.M. The library is
closed on Holidays. There is off-street parking and handicap accessibility. The purpose of
RCGS is to preserve genealogical records, collect Bible and family records, and aid
individuals in their research and to receive and hold gifts to be used for educational
purposes.
The Kansas Room houses a comprehensive collection of county histories, cemetery
records, birth, death, marriage records, deeds, school records, and periodicals from most
Kansas counties. Also, federal and state census indexes are located here. A compact
shelving unit in the recently completed addition holds nearly 5,000 books and periodicals
from states other than Kansas, as well as from Canada and other countries. The microfilm
collection is also located here. Our CD-ROM collection contains easily searched
databases and access to the internet via our research computers provides a wealth of
genealogical materials. Computer assistance is available by request. The society has nearly
completed its collection of census microfilms for surrounding Kansas counties. In addition
the 1930 US census is on order.
A card catalog catalogs individuals listed on members' pedigree charts. In addition, every
item in the collection is cataloged in the library card catalogue which is soon to be
computerized. This library serves family historians within a 60-mile radius of Manhattan,
Kansas, as well as providing researched answers to queries from those who contact us via
letters, the internet, and telephone.
Other collections of interest to researchers may be found in Hale Library on the Kansas
State University campus, and in the Riley County Historical Museum also on Claflin Road.
For out of town researchers, Manhattan provides numerous motels and restaurants to
accommodate overnight stays.
