About this Cemetery:
Highland Cemetery, also referred to as Nall Cemetery, is tucked away in a quaint residential neighborhood in Prairie Village, KS, near the state and city line of Kansas City, Missouri. In the 1850s, this land was part of the Shawnee Nation reservation. When the Shawnees were later removed to Oklahoma, pioneer brothers John and Thomas Nall and their families squatted out 200 acres and became prosperous farmers. Half of this one-acre cemetery was owned by John Nall, the other by a friend and neighbor, John A White, and Indian. It is believe White is interred here with his wife.
Cemetery Ownership: In 1946 the first yearly meeting was held for the Highland Cemetery Association. The Nalls, Porters, and their other neighbors made up this association. Offices were elected and donations were given to fund the care of the cemetery in apparent exchange for lots. The association continued to have yearly meetings, and provide donations in this way, into the next generation of the Nalls and their neighboring families. In 1968, the first official plat was made in the newly developed city of Prairie Village. The first plots were sold to Asher Langworthy, and his namesake and other descendents of those first pioneers still hold offices in the Highland Cemetery Association today.
