The Sonora post office was located in the southwest one-fourth of section 12, township 34 south, range 6 west on land owned by A. Culbertson. The Atlas map (1886) shows Sonora as being situated in a large grove of trees, probably a timber claim. The post office was established march 8, 1880 and was discontinued May 25, 1888. The first postmaster was Azariah Culbertson.
