STATE OF KANSAS

The Adjutant General's report of the State of Kansas for the years 1861-'65, which contains the only printed record of the soldiers of Kansas who were mustered into the service of the United States during the war of the rebellion, in entirely out of print; volume II, which contains the roster of the later regiments from the 12th Infantry down, was destroyed by fire before it left the hands of the printer; but a few copies were saved.

It is but justice that the record of the heroic men who made the name of Kansas famous by their deeds be perpetuated, and to this end this reprint is made.

It is to be regretted that the time is not sufficient to compile a volume recording the names and history of the members of the militia regiments who did such gallant service along the border during the dark days of the war. It is a duty that the state owes to her brave defenders, and, it is hoped, will be performed before time and fast-decaying records render it impossible.
