Fort Cobb, at the junction of Pond creek and the Washita river, in the Indian Territory, was established on Oct. 1, 1859, and was one of the early frontier posts erected and garrisoned for the purpose of maintaining order among the Indian tribes. Gen. Custer's command, in which was the Nineteenth Kansas, was encamped at Fort Cobb from Dec. 18, 1868, to Jan. 6, 1869. On March 12, 1869, the fort was abandoned.
