History

Organized in 1879. County Seat, WaKeeney. Named in memory of Edward P. Trego, Captain of Company H, Eighth Kansas Infantry, killed September 19, 1863 at Chickamauga, Tenn.   Map and text from History of Kansas, Noble Prentis, 1899

William G. Cutler's History of Kansas, first published in 1883, tells about early Trego County.   The Special Collections of the Ablah Library at WSU contain historical images of Trego County towns: Collyer & WaKeeney.   The Kansas State Historical Society also has more historical data for Trego County online including a rich bibliography and lists of cemeteries, post offices, and newspapers.
