Nemaha County KS

History

Organized in 1873. County seat, Seneca. Named from a river in Nebraska--the Nemaha, one of whose branches drains the northern half of the county.

The Special Collections of the Ablah Library at WSU contain historical images of Seneca, Sabetha, Goff, Baileyville, Corning, Centralia, Bern, and Oneida.

William G. Cutler's History of Kansas, first published in 1883, tells about early Nemaha County.

The Wetmore Calaboose is described on a sign beside the old jail in Wetmore.

St. Mary's Church in St. Benedict is listed on both the Kansas and National Registers of Historic Places.
