History

Map of Miami County, KS in 1899
Organized in 1855 under the name of Lykins.  County seat, Paola.  In honor of Dr. David Lykins. who was a missionary among the Miamis.  He was also a member of the first Territorial Council.  Name changed in 1861 to Miami, after the tribe of Indians.

William G. Cutler's History of Kansas, first published in 1883, tells about early Miami County.
 
The Special Collections of the Ablah Library at WSU contain historical images of Bucyrus, Paola, Osawatomie, and Louisburg.
