Organized in 1870. County seat Mankato. Named in honor of Lieutenant-Colonel Lewis R. Jewell, Sixth Kansas Cavalry, who died November 30, 1862, of wounds received in the battle of Cane Hill, Ark. November 28, 1862.

William G. Cutler's History of Kansas, first published in 1883, tells about early Jewell County.

Lovewell Reservoir in Jewel County

Special Places in Jewell County

  • Lovewell Reservoir in a hilly section of northern Jewell county is one of the prettiest lakes in the state. There's also a state park there.
  • The Ute Theater in downtown Mankato has been refurbished and is showing movies again.
  • The Jewell County Historical Society in Mankato has two large store buildings on Commercial St that are crammed full of exhibits and artifacts.
  • The old stone jail in Mankato is a perfect expression of the optimism that led Kansas to build such ornate public works.
