Greeley County, KS

History

Organized July 9, 1887. County seat, Tribune. Named in honor of the founder of the New York Tribune.

Horace Greeley (1811-1872) was publisher of the New York Tribune and fought for Kansas entry into the Union as a free state. He was also famous for his boosterism of the West: "Go west young man."

The Special Collections of the Ablah Library at WSU contain historical images of Horace.
