Ellis County

History

Organized in 1867. Hays is the county seat. Named in memory of George Ellis, First Lieutenant of Company I, Twelfth Kansas Infantry, killed in battle April 30, 1864, at Jenkins Ferry, Arkansas.   Map and text from History of Kansas, Noble Prentis, 1899

Special Places in Ellis County

• The limestone St. Fidelis Church, the Cathedral of the Plains, in Victoria is a magnificent Catholic church built by German settlers. It was dedicated August 27, 1911
• Saint Mary's church in Antonino is an "almost new" brick church since it was built in 1952.
• The KSU Agricultural Research Center-Hays is the largest dryland research center in the world, and has been in operation for over 100 years.
