Doniphan County 

History

Organized in 1855.  County seat Troy.  In honor of Col. A. W. Doniphan, of Missouri. He commanded a regiment of cavalry during the Mexican War, marching across the plains, and taking a very prominent part in the conquest of New Mexico. Special Places in Doniphan County

• There's a 35 foot Indian statue on the courthouse lawn in Troy. It was carved by sculptor Peter Toth from a burr oak log.
   
• From the lookout in White Cloud overlooking the Missouri River, you can see parts of four states.
   
• The Wilbur Chapman monument on Main Street in White Cloud was erected by the American Leprosy Society.
   
• Irvin Hall on the campus of Highland College is the oldest educational building in Kansas, dating from 1858.
   
• The Iowa, Sac & Fox Mission State Historic Site is three miles outside of Highland. It was established in 1837 to serve and train Indians being relocated to Kansas from their ancestral homes.

Special Events

• Troy celebrates Pioneer Days in mid-September with craft demonstrations, cider pressing, bluegrass music, and buggy rides.
