Join KLA and KLTA: Support Kansas Libraries!

8 Reasons to Join KLTA!

KLTA has just one purpose: Helping local boards do their job. Do all of your trustees belong to KLTA? If not, you're missing out on 8 ways to get savings, information, training and clout.

8. Trustee-Friends DayNew trustees, veterans and directors learn the latest, find out what other Kansas libraries do, network and enjoy good food at this annual event. Since 1999, topics have covered taming teens, booksales, recruiting library and Friends boards, fund-raising, working with city/county officials, diagnosing space headaches … and much more.
Due to the generosity of sponsors, TF Day also provides national keynote speakers and the ever-popular Kansas Koffee Klatch where folks compare notes while enjoying breakfast goodies.
7. Website – Get 24/7 access to:
• Four board meeting continuing education topics that earn trustee certification credits from the State Library
• Sample director evaluation forms
• Trustee recruitment video for use in your board meeting
• Beginners Web for the keyboard challenged
• Much, much more
6. Legislative advocacy - In 2008, KLTA is working hard to help pass Kansas Delivers! legislation that would provide a statewide courier service. KLTA’s members are asked to contact their own state representative and senator.
In 2002, KLTA’s clout helped fund the Kan-Ed telecommunications effort. That included grants, databases and training for libraries. Alert: If we don’t tell legislators what’s important, they think we don’t care!
5. Legislative Day - KLTA helps promote the annual Kansas Library Legislative Day through its newsletter and website. Trustees who go to Topeka receive a special KLTA button!
4. Continuing Education (CE) – Our commitment to CE led the State Library to request that KLTA study the possibility of trustee certification. KLTA’s research included Kansas’ trustee training and efforts in other states.
Our recommendations for a Kansas Trustee Education Program (KanTEP) were delivered in October, 2006. They were the foundation of the State Library of Kansas’ trustee certification program, “Reaching for Excellence.” For “Questions Answered on the Kansas Library Trustee Certification Program,” go to
3. KanTEP board meeting topicsfour short topics were developed for use by directors in board meetings. The topics earn credits in the State Library’s trustee certification program. Its five areas are working with the administration, creating a good board, handling budget and advocacy, developing good library policy and participating in strategic planning.
The KanTEP topics are:
• “Marketing the library to the community”
• “Budget issues for trustees”
• “Evaluating the director”
• “Effective board meetings”
Directors get a script and a trustee handout for each of the four topics. Training is expected to last from 15-20 minutes. In the 2007 pilot test in 10 libraries, all 46 trustees returning evaluations said they’d like more board meeting CE. The preferred frequency was 3-4 months.
2. Partnerships - KLTA works closely with Friends of Kansas Libraries, KLA, the KLA Governmental Affairs Committee, the regional library systems and the State Library. Why? To use all the minds possible to help local boards do the best possible.
